Dental crowns or caps are restorations that cover and protect the entire outer surface of the tooth encompassing it from all surfaces. They could be compared to placing a glove over your hand. Dental crowns are used to repair broken or excessively damaged teeth, strengthen teeth and improve cosmetic appearance. Crowns can be made from a metal (such as gold), or natural looking tooth coloured porcelain ceramic.

A dental bridge is essentially a hollow crown that is used to replace missing teeth. A bridge is attached to the two other teeth around the space – “bridging” them together. The two supporting teeth need to be prepared in order to enable attachment of bridging crowns. A bridge is ideal when the supporting teeth surrounding the gap are strong and healthy. Missing teeth can also be replaced with dental implants, which are a more permanent long-term solution.
