I was used to going to the dentist when I was a child and although I didn’t particularly enjoy the experience, I wasn’t petrified.
All that changed in the 1990’s, when I had treatment in Oxford when I was a student. The experience was so painful and traumatic that I didn’t go to a dentist again until 2007. I found Smile Design Dental Practice via the internet
Komal is so understanding and gentle with me, I needed a lot of treatment but she took everything very gradually at a pace she though I could cope with, although I am still petrified she has managed to get me through her door and do the necessary treatment without it been painful or traumatic. She puts me at ease each visit. I am so pleased I have found her as she has given me so much confidence to try and conquer my fear.

I came to see Komal over 5 years ago because I wanted something done with my teeth. They were crooked and discoloured.
Komal and her team were extremely helpful, knowledgeable and discussed all of the possibilities. I decided to have my top teeth veneered. I want that “Hollywood smile” Komal explained everything and was even able to create a computer image of what my teeth would look like, they were fantastic. I couldn’t wait to get them done.
I started off with having the bottom set bleached and then there were 2 other visits. The final visit resulted in perfect teeth, they look amazing. Everybody I meet say how lovely my smile is, people ask me, “Have you had your teeth whitened?” and NOT “Do I have veneers?” because they look so real.
I am so glad I decided to do this, it’s one of the best things I have ever done. It’s a pleasure coming to Smile Design Dental Practice, the girls are very friendly and the surroundings are comfortable. I would recommend it to anyone wanting a smile makeover to come and see Komal. Even just having your teeth whitened can make you look and feel so much better about yourself. It had been two years since I visited a dentist the most obvious reason of not attending was the fear of any pain, there is nothing worse for me than a dentist that hits a nerve accidently, trust me I know.
I knew my teeth and gums were beginning to look unhealthy so I thought I would try a different approach and seek the advice of a private dentist, that is when I went to see Komal and to my horror due to the neglect I had subjected my teeth to Komal informed me that I had gum disease. This was not good as I was then told I would have to undergo 4 hours of gum treatment, so before I knew it I was back in a dentist chair undergoing treatment and I have to say that I was apprehensive although I needn’t have been I didn’t feel a thing, I was feeling a lot better about going to the dentist already.
After all the treatment had been done my gums were healed but I still wasn’t happy with my teeth, I had a crown in the front that stuck out slightly and the other front tooth was worn away so Komal and I discussed the option of veneers and I went ahead and had them done. It was the best thing I could have done and Komal made it easy for me to sit in the chair and have the work done, which is something that I never would have dreamed of doing.
I now walk around confident to smile whereas before I would always put my hand up toward my mouth worried that people were looking at my teeth, obviously now I want people to look at my teeth and that’s all thanks to Komal.

At the age of 13, I told my mum I wanted a nice smile, unknown to me at the time, this was the start of my long journey to achieve it.
My local dentist explained that I had several teeth which overlapped and would require extensive corrective treatment and dedication from me. Having convinced him that I really did want a nice smile, I was referred to a specialist at the dental hospital in Edinburgh. I spent 2 long years of corrective action, with heavy metal braces fixed to both top and bottom and tiny elastic bands to ‘pull’ the teeth into line, as braces were back in the early 70’s. This treatment was eventually completed and the braces removed to reveal a set of evenly spaced teeth, I no longer felt self conscious or embarrassed to laugh.
This ‘freedom’ continued until at the age of 18, I fainted and knocked out my top 3 front teeth. From here on I was to ‘suffer’ various bridge designs, some better than others, but always aware of their vulnerability and the subsequent embarrassment, contributing to low self esteem over the next 30 odd years.
In Spring 2007, and coming up to my 50th birthday, my existing bridge, which had served me well for over 20 years, was now well past its ‘expected end of life’ and after several discussions with my local dentist at Smile Design, Dr Komal Suri referred me to Dominic Hassall to discuss the options available.
After further consultations and X-rays, Dominic carefully explained that I could replace the existing bridge with a newer model or a more expensive option was to consider implants. This was a no brainer; I had no hesitation and immediately selected the implant option.
At this stage of my life I was fortunate to have the funds to pay for this treatment, but did feel obliged to look at the new ‘dental holidays’ now being quoted at half the cost of the UK treatments. However, regardless of the ‘cheaper’ foreign options, I was convinced that the experience which I had already received from Smile Design, provided me with the trust in their ability to do a caring and professional job and provide me with more guarantees than the foreign treatments.
Having elected to carry on with the treatment from Smile Design, more consultations, X-rays and scans showed that I had insufficient bone density to hold the implants in place. Again, Dominic carefully explained the treatments to ‘add’ more bone together with a ‘ballpark’ figure of the additional costs. It was explained to me that there was two methods, they could use a bone graft either from my nose or hip, which requires an additional operation and recovery, or ‘synthetic bone’ which my body may reject.
This setback also allowed me to reflect on whether the foreign treatments would have advised me of this fact, or would they have just taken my money and allowed me to find this out several years down the line.
In Oct 07, I had the operation to add more bone density using the synthetic bone and awaited the results. By Nov 08, Dominic was fully satisfied that the operation had been successful and there was now sufficient bone to ‘hold’ the implants securely.
In Dec 08, Komal measured me up for the implants, and at this stage I also knew that I wanted my other teeth whitened to match my new implants. Again, I was advised of the options available, whitening, veneers or caps, with each one carefully explained, together with a quote. I selected the veneers for the teeth either side of the implants and whitening for my lower teeth.
Approximately, 18 months on from my first appointment with Komal, on Feb 16th 2009, I had my final appointment to get the implants and veneers fitted. Six months on, when I laugh or smile I still catch myself thinking how amazing it is that I no longer have to worry or be embarrassed to laugh naturally without ‘shielding’ behind my hand.
One lesson I learnt through this experience, was that the longer you leave treatment, the more work will have to be done in the future. If at the age of 18 I had been able to get implants instead of a bridge, I would not have needed the painful operation for the additional bone.
It’s taken me almost 40 years to finally get a nice smile which does not make me feel self-conscious and although it may seem expensive in some peoples view, to me, it was worth every penny. Everyone at Smile Design and associated with it, provided me with the utmost care and attention I could have possibly asked for.

I would just to like to say a very big thank you to all the staff at the Practice for being so friendly and helpful. They all assisted in making me feel comfortable and relaxed during what could have been a very stressful time.
I would especially like to say thank you to Komal, I have always been very conscious of my teeth so I decided to speak with my dentist who refereed me to a consultant near Bicester. The practice staff were not particularly helpful and came across as quite rude, which upset me a great deal.
My friend found Smile Design in a magazine and I made an appointment which is the best thing I ever did. The results are so much better than I ever could have imagined. I have now got a lot more confidence and I'm so much happier in myself. My family and friends say they have seen a real difference in me.

I have been attending Smile Design ever since the practice moved to 33 High Street in Wendover.
In all the years that I have been visiting Dr Komals practice I have been warmly greeted and the standard of dental performance is excellent.
Nothing is a problem to the Smile Design Team and during my recent extensive treatment they went out of their way to support me from start to finish. From the planning consultation through to the final hygienist visits I experienced top class performance all round.
Most importantly the result Dr Komal achieved with my dental work is beyond my expectations and I am delighted with the outcome.
I would recommend this practice to all.

My teeth had been an embarrassment for a long time; visits to dentists have combined pain with humiliation for many years.
Now I am a patient at Smile Design I feel very differently. The waiting room is smart, the receptionists are friendly, calm and sociable (one could almost imagine they were social contacts!). Over the years that I have been at the practice, Komal has calmly moved from crisis management of my teeth, to long term corrections, to making sure the implants I needed to replace broken front teeth were seamlessly blended with my own teeth, but subtly better. During the process which took place over several years, Komal made temporary new teeth for me that were works of art, as she carefully matched colour, shading and texture to my remaining natural teeth.
I am now in the final stage of this process, as my appointments now are mainly with the expert and inspiring hygienist, working to limit further damage to my teeth. After a life time of resigned progress of decay and fillings and extractions, this is real progress!
During this process I was always impressed by the whole staff at the practice, as they were always calm, cheerful, efficient and understanding. In addition, staff are included in training in cosmetic dentistry and supported in their professional development. I am aware of this because of the natural and easy style of chat in the surgery that is open and cheerful.
Now, I am proud of my teeth, and have no reluctance to visit the dental practice! Thankyou, everyone at Smile Design!

Chernobyl Children’s Life Line Project (CCLL)
Every year CCLL bring hundreds of children to the UK from Belarus to benefit from a month of fresh air, clean healthy food and fun staying with their host families. In 1986 Belarus received 60% of the nuclear fallout following the Chernobyl disaster in neighbouring Ukraine polluting the land upon which so many depended for their food, farming and livelihood. During their stay the children receive health checks, have their eyes tested and their dental health checked and one month here boosts their immunity for up to five years. Many have had cancer and serious health problems.
Andrei 10 and Kolia 11 came to stay with us in Wendover and Komal, my dentist, agreed to see both boys during their stay in July and August 2008. Because of our lack of Russian and their lack of English both boys were escorted on their visits by Tamara their leader, who translated for Komal, explaining to them what she was going to do. On their first visit we also had a young man on work experience, so the consulting room was rather full - both boys were keen to see what the other one was having done!
It was the first of five visits when Komal carried out ordinary fillings, a root filling, an extraction and the removal of a coating. She commented that the standard to work on their teeth was to a good standard, which was good to hear. Andrei and Kolia were excited about going to the dentist and thought, “the lady was very nice”. They came out covered in stickers with big smiles on their faces. While they were here they used at least one large tube of toothpaste every week - this was obviously a novelty too! We were very grateful for Komal treating the children free of charge and sending them home with their teeth in tiptop condition.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the hard and difficult work you have done for me after my local dentist made a very bad job of straightening a front tooth and 4 veneers I was in so much pain and they only made things worse trying to repair the bad work done in the first place it was by chance a friend recommended you and I got you number from the yellow pages and I have never looked back. The work you have done is outstanding, you have such a skill and understanding of your patents and the rest of your staff are outstanding also such respect and dedication and also a special thank you to Karen Ignatowski who was also very helpful and understanding.
