Veneers to close gaps

What are dental veneers?
Veneers are thin custom made mouldings that cover the front of discoloured, crooked and unsightly teeth. They are crafted like fine pieces of jewellery from tooth coloured hi-tech porcelain to portray a natural bright smile.

When would you need a veneer?
Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the colour you desire if you wish to whiten your teeth, or the colour can be matched to your existing teeth. A veneer can make a chipped tooth look intact again. The porcelain covers the whole of the front of the tooth with a thicker section replacing the broken part. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when orthodontics is not suitable.

How long will a veneer last?
Veneers are intended to last for many years. The exact length of time depends on the individual life style and habits i.e veneers should be cared for just like your normal teeth. Veneers can chip just like normal teeth can. On average they have a life span of approximately 10 to 15 years after which they will begin to look aged just like normal teeth would at this point you can choose to have them replaced with new ones. If or when a veneer breaks they can either be repaired or replaced with new ones.

How are teeth prepared for veneers?
Some of the outer enamel surface of the tooth is removed. This is to make the teeth the desired shape and to ensure permanent bonding when the veneers are fitted. The amount of enamel removed is normally 0.5 – 0.7mm for reasonably straight teeth. This amount does increase if the teeth are crooked or extremely discoloured. A local anaesthetic will be used to make sure there is no discomfort throughout the procedure. Once the teeth have been prepared, an impression is taken which will be sent to the dental technician so that veneers can be made.

Will I need temporary veneers?
It is preferable to have temporary veneers after the preparation so that you will have an idea of the appearance of the final restorations and any alterations can be made at this point. This is a great opportunity to test drive your new smile before the veneers are fitted.

What happens after the veneers have been fitted?
Minor adjustments can be made to the veneers after they are fitted. It is usually best to wait a little while to get used to them before any changes are made.

Advantages of Veneers:

Tooth like appearance - Since veneers are individually sculpted for each patient, it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between the veneer and the natural tooth.

Stain Resistant - Custom made veneers resist stains from coffee, tea and cigarette smoke because they are made from hi – tech, extremely polished materials.

Maintaining your Veneers

Here are some tips for making sure your veneers stay sparkling:

Brush and floss regularly to prevent oral hygiene problems
Veneers generally cannot be damaged by abrasion from toothbrush or floss
Good oral hygiene will ensure your veneers stay strong and provide you with long lasting attractive smile.

Keep in Mind

When considering veneers, there are some important points to consider before undergoing treatment.

Anaesthetic advised - Generally the use of local anaesthetic is advised to maintain comfort throughout the treatment process.

Non – reversible procedure - Because a small amount if tooth is reduced to fit the veneers, the process is not reversible.

Strength of Veneers - Veneers provide more strength when crushing an object than twisting or tearing . Therefore, just as with natural teeth, patients with veneers are advised to avoid opening nutshells, chewing on bones, or any other matter that may cause the veneers to chip or crack.
